FDA Recommended Dosages… Incredibly Insufficient!
As I mentioned above, the daily recommended dosage (RDA) of Vitamin D is 400 IU (international units). Taking this amount of Vitamin D guarantees you one thing: Deficiency!
In fact through the years, the FDA’s RDA stayed remarkably consistent, even when the rest of the health conscious community was recommending progressively higher amounts.

The level of Vitamin D recommended by the FDA is the absolute minimum the body needs in order to avoid catastrophic health problems, giving our bodies the barest amount necessary to function without falling apart. For me, this isn't health – it's disaster just waiting to happen.
Vitamin D Is Safe!
The fear of over-supplementing with Vitamin D3 is a myth – and has been largely debunked by independent research. (Don't go running to Big Pharma for these studies. The last thing they want you doing is taking control of your own health. Healthy people don't need expensive drugs, and that's bad for business.)
Much of the confusion centers around Vitamin D3 and Vitamin A. In the past, these two nutrients were often found compounded together in the same supplement. Too much Vitamin A can be counter-productive, but the Vitamin A was not integral with the Vitamin D3.
To be entirely secure, I generally recommend taking a Vitamin K2 supplement (100 mcg) along with the D3. Not only will the K2 enhance the effectiveness of Vitamin D, it’s yet another essential nutrient the majority of the world’s population is sorely lacking in.
CAUTION! Not All Vitamin D Is The Same
There’s more than one version of Vitamin D. The biologically active form is known as D3 or cholecalciferol. (How's that for a tongue twister!)
Many inferior supplements contain a cheaper D2 version. But this D2 is inactive and must be first converted into D3 before it has any effects on health. This is a largely wasteful process – especially when the active D3 is so readily available.
Higher Daily Intake
As you just read above, my very latest general recommendation for Vitamin D3 supplementation should be at the very least 8000 IU/day – 20 times the current RDA levels.
New scientific findings have revealed the sweeping multiple functions of Vitamin D - far beyond anything mainstream doctors were (and still are) being taught.
In fact, many leading nutritionists are starting to recommend Vitamin D3 supplementation for newborn babies in their first 24 hours of life! (Of course, the amount suggested is lower than what an adult would take.)
A Special Commentary: Why I don't (and can't!) mention specific health conditions and treatments.
I am a huge proponent of evidence-based medicine, solid research and double-blind studies. However, even a licensed medical doctor is prohibited by the FDA and other governmental agencies from referring to specific studies in the scientific literature when it comes to recommending products on a website such as this.
There can be literally hundreds or even thousands of scientific studies concerning the effects of a supplement or natural bio-nutrient on specific diseases or conditions – but I can’t mention them – or even link my readers to their sites.
I can’t even mention the disease itself under its medically accepted name!
Doing so in the eyes of the ingrained legal medical establishment would constitute “making medical claims” or “treating a disease” or “effecting a cure.”
It doesn’t matter one whit if the studies are absolutely true. I can’t tell you about them, because apparently you’re not supposed to know and make your own choices about your own health.
That’s why in every reputable website promoting natural alternatives to one’s health and welfare, the author’s must couch their words in “opinions” and euphemisms. It’s certainly not because they want to – it’s because they can be shut down, fined or even jailed if they don’t censor themselves.
The irony is that these draconian restrictions fall strongest on those sites and companies with the finest products. The ones promoting useless remedies and worthless nostrums don’t care about following the law. They slap up their websites, grab all the money they can, then vanish – only to resurrect themselves under a new identity and start the game all over again.
The regulations are for the law abiding – not the flim-flam artists who thumb their collective noses at these ridiculous restraints and laugh all the way to the bank.
So… having explained this, please note that I am not recommending that anyone should stop their prescription drugs without first consulting with their medical physician or doctor. Nor am I giving specific medical advice to any individual, which can only be done within the confines of a doctor patient relationship.
Guidelines To Better Health
I highly recommend that adults start taking 8000 IU (International Units) of Vitamin D3 per day.
Most formulations come in pills or capsules of 400 IU, and a few can even be found at 1000 IU or even 2000 IU. While taking up to 20 capsules a day is of course doable, it isn't very feasible or economical. Even taking 4 capsules a day can become problematic (and boring!) for many.
